ShiatsuShiatsu is a type of oriental massage stressing the application of finger pressure, in fact SHI means finger and ATSU means pressure. It uses a specific type of stimulation to promote health by preventing illness. Although Shiatsu has, since the start of the Taisho Era (1912-1926), incorporated many techniques from chiropractice and osteopathy. Instead of smooth continuous movements as in Western massage, shiatsu applies continuous pressure to any one area of the body for a set interval and then proceeds to the next area in ordered succession. When treatment of a specific ailment is the purpose, then continuous pressure is applied to each acupoint of the treatment pattern for a prolonged period of time. During these few seconds of continuous pressure the finger-tips act as sensor probes and the paitent’s reaction is registered by the practitioner who then adjusts the strength and duration of pressure to that which is most suitable for the patient.
