Osteopathy
Osteopathy is treatment of bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and
connective tissue. It's main emphasis lies within the structural
and mechanical problems of the body. The osteopath considers the
person as a whole and takes into account all aspects of that individuals
life in order to discover the underlying cause of the complaint.
Osteopaths use their hands to diagnose and treat using a wide
variety of manipulative techniques, from gentle soft tissue (deep
massage) to high velocity thrusts (clicks)
Osteopathy is about as old as modern medicine, originating in the
USA in the 1870s. It came to Britain about 70 years ago. The Osteopaths
Act was passed in 1993 which provides a regulatory framework for
the profession and a new governing council is now being established
- the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) which combines all the
regulatory bodies into one.
As registered Osteopaths, we are all members of the register of
Osteopaths, as recommended by the Minister for Health. Membership
indicates that the practitioner has professional indemnity insurance,
works to a code of ethics and is bound by disciplinary procedure.
To qualify as a member you must have completed a course at one of
the recognised schools.
What Can It Help?

- Low Back Pain: caused by e.g. Postural strain and disc injuries
- Arthritis: Osteopathy can help with the pain and the stiffness
- Sports Injuries: Tennis elbow, knee and shoulder pain
- Headaches, neck and shoulder pain
- Strain caused by pregnancy: osteopathy can help the body adjust
Osteopaths can also give advice on posture (sitting/standing),
computer setup, lifting, exercising, weight control and diet.
Your Consultation
The first consultation consists of the practitioner taking an account
of your
complaint
and running through a brief medical history. You will then be
asked to remove some of your clothing and the practitioner will
look at your posture, spine and you will be asked to perform some
simple movements.
Throughout this process the practitioner will be gaining information
as to how your body works and where the fault lies. An evaluation
is then made as to the underlying reason for the complaint and then
treatment is aimed at removal of the cause
