Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
History
During the 1930’s Dr Emil Vodder, a Danish physical therapist,
created a set of movements which he found to be particularly successful
in helping clear chronic catarrh and facial acne. He went on to
learn more about the lymphatic system and devise a further set
of treatments and sequences for the whole body. He concluded that
his technique (Manual Lymphatic Drainage) could be applied to
almost any condition because of the important role the lymphatic
system plays in our bodies.
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic, non-invasive
form of massage designed to help improve the functioning of the
lymphatic system. The rhythmical circling movements of the skin
stimulate contractions of the lymphatic vessels which allow a
greatere amount of metabolic waste and excess fluid to be removed
from the tissue and enter into the lymphatic system. This in turn
passes through the lymph nodes where it is cleansed and returned
to the blood stream.
